ACT Region 2019 DreamCricket Gala Day

  1. The Gala Day. The Gala was held on Tuesday 5 November 2019 the Radford College Main Oval.  One hundred and twenty-five primary school age children with a disability from seven schools took part, supported by a significant number of teachers, carers and parents.

  1. On arrival the children were escorted by their Radford College assistants through a welcoming archway formed by approximately 80 Junior School students from Radford. Once all the children had arrived the Gala Day was officially opened on schedule at 10:00 am by Mrs Fiona Godfrey, the Principal of Radford College.  Other VIPs included: Mr Ric Smith, President of the ACT Lord’s Taverners; Mr Dennis Yarrington, President of the Australian Primary Principals Association; Mr Murray Paterson, Secretary DreamCricket Australia ;representative from ActewAGL; and a number of Presidents of local Rotary Clubs.

  1. Between 10:15 am and noon, including a drinks break from 11:00 – 11:15 am, the children in their teams played six different activities, all of which have been designed to develop a particular cricket skill (e.g. batting, throwing a ball etc). Each of these activities were supervised by the Radford College Year 9/10 assistants who also provided bucket-loads of encouragement and enthusiasm (high fives all round).

  1. Between 12:00 and 12:30 pm the children had their lunch, including sausage sandwiches and fresh fruit for those who were allowed, followed by a game of run-out cricket, which exercised all the skills the children had been practising before lunch. On completion medallions were awarded to every participating child by two cricketers from ACT Cricket (Tom Vane-Tempest from ACT Comets and Samantha Bates from ACT Meteors and Sydney Thunder).  By this stage the children were noticeably tiring, it was also a hot day, and they were then escorted to their buses and returned to their schools.  According to feedback from their teachers they arrived home exhausted but very happy.
